SOCIAL MOVEMENTS IN GLOBAL PERSPECTIVES: PAST - PRESENT - FUTURE

A new teaching programme of the Institute for Social Movements (ISB) “Social Movements in Global Perspectives – Past, Present and Future” will run for the first time throughout the summer semester 2014 at the Ruhr-University Bochum in the framework of the interdisciplinary programme inStudies. It takes place at Beckmanns Hof at the Ruhr University.

The programme offers 30 advanced BA students an opportunity to approach the topic of Social Movements in Global Perspectives from a range of different perspectives. It familiarizes participants with the fascinating field of social movements and its manifold forms of appearance like e.g. labour, human rights, feminist or anti-globalisation movements. The programme addresses the basic ideas and history of social movements as well as current aspects from a more sociological approach while taking into consideration political and economic perspectives at all times. Students will especially engage with tensions between mostly national approaches to social movements on the one hand and the international structures of social movements on the other hand.

The programme “Social Movements in Global Perspectives” starts with the preparatory meeting on June 16th, 2014. The Summer School in the format of a conference is the heart of the programme and will take place at Ruhr-University Bochum, Germany from September 1st to 12th, 2014. At this interdisciplinary conference the students will engage with different aspects of social movements (see the programme) every day. National and international experts - historians, sociologists and others - in the particular fields will give keynotes and presentations and will discuss current positions of research as well as problems of the social movements with students in panel discussions and round table sessions. The Summer School is open to the public. The last session of the programme, the so-called “Future Workshop” (last week of September 2014, 2 days), will provide the follow-up of the conference and an opportunity to discuss future scenarios for social movements and social change.
